Founded in 1932 as the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Science, Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) has evolved through significant milestones. Under the stewardship of founders Harry and Gertrude Shapiro, it transitioned to the New Hampshire College of Accounting and Commerce in 1961, earning charter status in 1963. Becoming a nonprofit institution in 1968, it later rebranded as New Hampshire College in 1969. The 1970s saw growth, and in 1981, it gained authorization to offer master’s degrees. In 2001, it officially became SNHU.
